1 Samuel 24: 2-21; Psalm 57; Mark 3: 13-19
Today Jesus chooses Twelve, “whom he named apostles to be with him and to be sent out [apostellein] for a two-fold task: to proclaim good news and cast out demons. The Alleluia verse notes yet another service we apostles offer: “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to God’s own self; and the good news of reconciliation God has entrusted to us.” This fits with a dramatic story of Saul’s pursuit of David, David’s hiding in a cave and while Saul is vulnerable, cutting off a piece of Saul’s cloak. David reveres “the Lord’s anointed” whom he also calls “my father.” Saul realizes that David has repaid Saul good for his evil. “Who has ever found an enemy and sent the enemy away safely,” Saul asks. We know. Jesus has.
How do you see your apostolic mission? Are you one to proclaim or live good news? How, when, where? How can you cast out demons? (Be sure to ask the Spirit to teach you). How are you an ambassador for reconciliation? Even if bed ridden, that last one is your important service, for the sake of the world.
Reconciling Christ, bring us together as one. You in us, we in you, all one in you: Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists—all children of God, one in you!
