Feast of Matthais, Apostle Acts 1: 15-17, 20-26; Psalm 113; John 15: 9-17
We begin with the narrative of Matthais’ election to fill out the number Twelve, sacred to Luke who portrays the young church as the new Israel with Twelve new tribes. We conclude with words so often repeated during this Easter season: Jesus’ call to bear fruit, to love one another, to lay down one’s life. He calls his disciples and us his friends, moving us to a deeper intimacy than servant. “The servant does not know what the master is doing.”
What is the master doing? In your life? In the life of the world? Friendship is mutual. He makes known to us what he has learned from God; and we, we make known to him….? What? Do you let Jesus know you in every part of your life? Ask the Spirit to let you know yourself as deeply as Jesus does.
We pray so often for our enemies, for peace between nations. So today we pray for our friends, for peace in all our relationships. Thank you for friends, and your friendship too!
