Immaculate Heart of Mary
Isaiah 61:9-11; 1 Samuel 2; Luke 2: 41-51
Who, looking at this statue, the only survivor of Nagasaki’s cathedral, could ever pray: “Lovely lady, dressed in blue….?” Oh, she can teach us to pray all right! Not a child’s prayer. An adult who, heart-broken, contemplates the pain and the evil in our world. As Michelangelo’s imagination gave us a smooth and lovely Pieta, this hollow-eyed, damaged statue of Mary reminds us of the horrors of war, especially nuclear war.
Pray for us, holy mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. And we have been made worthy. Now teach us how to pray and to act for justice and peace. Pray for us and especially for all victims of violence, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
