Ascension of the Lord Acts 1: 1-11; Psalm 47; Ephesians 1: 17-23; Luke 24: 46-53
Although we don’t hear of any signs and wonders performed by the risen Lord, they must have sensed another kind of power flowing from him as he continued to instruct them through the Holy Spirit. Yet they still wanted “times and periods” for the arrival of God’s reign. No, no certainty in our faith, or it would not be faith at all. Rather we are a people of hope, not certainty. Ephesians speaks of wisdom, enlightened eyes and hearts, and hope. This is what Jesus did in the upper room, opening scripture for them, and giving them hope that they would be “clothed with power from on high.” They worshipped him and even though he left them physically, they were filled with joy.
Imagine what Mary was feeling as Jesus was “carried up to heaven.” “Make me feel as you have felt, make my heart to glow and melt, with the love of Christ your son.” Imagine what God was feeling. Ponder the hope Jesus must have felt—hope of reunion with God, hope of seeing his ancestors, his dear father Joseph. Now imagine your own ascension to God through death. Pray for the gift of hope.
May you give us an experience of the riches of your glory and a share in the immeasurable greatness of your power. Turn our ideas of power inside out. Let us wash feet with you!
