Acts 5: 17-26; Psalm 34; John 3: 16-21
Tables are turned on those who persecute the apostles out of jealousy. When the apostles, freed by an angel from prison, return to preach, it is the priestly caste and their police who are afraid that the people would stone them. In the gospel we have “realized eschatology.” Eschatology refers to death, judgment, heaven and hell. Most people think that will all come at the end, but John teaches that it is already made real (realized) in our current lives: “those who do not believe are condemned already.” And we, we have already come to the light. As the psalmist urges: “Look to God that your faces may be radiant with joy.”
Examine your experiences of smiling. When do you smile, why, where? Your face is light, radiant with joy. Smile now at your mental image of Jesus. His radiant face smiles on you. Your face relaxes. Have you noticed people in church and how somber they are? And you? Sometimes smiling at strangers (boldly yet silently sharing good news) can brighten their day. What small step today?
O Risen Christ, thank you for smiling on us, your face radiant with joy! Smile on all those who are alone in their suffering and let them feel your love and comfort.
