Acts 17: 15, 22-18: 1; Psalm 148; John 16: 12-15
Paul does what John XXIII hoped our ecumenical council would do: put our ancient doctrines into concepts and words that a new generation and many cultures could understand. When people are “groping for God” (Luke’s phrase), we all must feed the sheep, not just the pope and bishops. We are called to make the “unknown God” intelligible to the young, the workers, the women whom, Pope John warned, we are losing. Jesus said he has much more to say, but “you cannot bear it now.” When the Spirit of truth comes, the Spirit will guide us to all truth.
How do your “ancient doctrines” change? Ask the Spirit to show you how the Spirit teaches, and how you learn. Who in your circle needs to hear good news? How will you hand on the good news of Jesus? Ask for guidance.
Holy Spirit, encircle the whole world with your comfort and your challenge. Teach us how to approach those who are groping for God. Bless our missionary efforts.
